The Road by Cormac McCarthy

I read this book a few weeks ago. The whole thing in a day. I couldn’t put it down. I don’t read a lot anymore. I grew up without a TV so I used to read a lot. Anyway… This is the first book by McCarthy I have read. I was familiar with the mans work.. mostly through a couple moves I had seen based on his work. All the pretty Horses & No Country for Old Men. No Country was actually one of my top 2 favorite movies from last year. One of my favorites of all time. But I attributed my love of the film to the Coen Brothers, whose work I LOVE.
But now I am going to read all of McCarthy’s books. Here’s what excited me… I was vaguely informed that a movie was being made based on this book. It’s not why I picked it up but I knew something was happening regarding a movie for it. But as soon as I finished the book, mourning the fact that it was over, I searched it out on IMDB. Then I got REALLY excited. John Hillcoat has ALREADY finished shooting the movie, in fact it will be out in a few months. Hillcoat is the director responsible for The Proposition, one of my other favorite movies I saw last year. One of my favorite westerns of all time. The pairing of this awesome story with a director such as Hillcoat… Well, it gives me goosebumps in anticipation. It IS the exact kind of movie experience I look forward to most.
The book is about a father and his young son in an apocalyptic future. But only on the surface. Its really about a parents love and commitment to the safety of his child. I found it very moving. Brutal. Real. Possible. I can not wait to see this movie. Go get the book NOW.
