The task of the narrator is not an easy one, he said. He appears to be required to choose his tale from among the many that are possible. But of course that is not the case. The case is rather to make many of the one. Always the teller must be at pains to devise against his listener’s claim – perhaps spoken, perhaps not – that he has heard the tale before. He sets forth the categories into which the listener will wish to fit the narrative as he hears it. but he understands that the narrative is itself in fact no category but is rather the category of all categories for there is nothing which falls outside its purview. All is telling. Do not doubt it.

From “The Crossing” by Cormac McCarthy

I don’t think anyone really humbles or inspires me as much as Cormac McCarthy.

I took the weekend off of blogging. Watched 4 DVD’s and wrote 10 pages of the new script (see below). Never even left the house and it was awesome. It rained outside anyways.

Watched (in this order) -

Inglorious Bastards – Super fun!

Smart People – Not as fun as I hoped & expected

Bella – Holy crap go see this beautiful movie. I had never even heard of it.
&
Starting Out in the Evening – Worth a rent if you have Netflix. I can’t say any more. Still haven’t figured out where to put this movie in my head, how to summarize it. But I do recommend it, the performances could not have been better.

Oh and – I finished reading “The Lovely Bones”

What a devastating book. And like the title says, quite lovely. It made me cry and I’m a cold hearted bastard. I can’t wait to see the movie that’s being made by Peter Jackson. If you are a reader then I recommend you read this book.

This morning was cold, wet and grey, almost exactly like the place I grew up. Southern California is looking closer every day.

Oh… I also did some push-ups over the weekend.

I read this book a few weeks ago. The whole thing in a day. I couldn’t put it down. I don’t read a lot anymore. I grew up without a TV so I used to read a lot. Anyway… This is the first book by McCarthy I have read. I was familiar with the mans work.. mostly through a couple moves I had seen based on his work. All the pretty Horses & No Country for Old Men. No Country was actually one of my top 2 favorite movies from last year. One of my favorites of all time. But I attributed my love of the film to the Coen Brothers, whose work I LOVE.

Coming Soon to Theatres

But now I am going to read all of McCarthy’s books. Here’s what excited me… I was vaguely informed that a movie was being made based on this book. It’s not why I picked it up but I knew something was happening regarding a movie for it. But as soon as I finished the book, mourning the fact that it was over, I searched it out on IMDB. Then I got REALLY excited. John Hillcoat has ALREADY finished shooting the movie, in fact it will be out in a few months. Hillcoat is the director responsible for The Proposition, one of my other favorite movies I saw last year. One of my favorite westerns of all time. The pairing of this awesome story with a director such as Hillcoat… Well, it gives me goosebumps in anticipation. It IS the exact kind of movie experience I look forward to most.

The book is about a father and his young son in an apocalyptic future. But only on the surface. Its really about a parents love and commitment to the safety of his child. I found it very moving. Brutal. Real. Possible. I can not wait to see this movie. Go get the book NOW.
