The Race – Chapter 3

This is the third week of “Official” training. I ran 4 miles on Sunday and 3.5 this morning. The last mile and a half this morning were actually easy and fun. I felt like I had another 3 in me. Maybe I’ll be able to do this thing. From here out I add a mile every 2 weeks up until the week before the race, topping out at 10 miles the last week. I haven’t been drinking at all. Watching what I eat. We went to a party on Saturday and several people said I look thinner. I didn’t believe them. I don’t see my friends that often. I don’t feel thinner yet but I hope I get there. Someone said I looked younger. I can’t remember who. That’s a nice compliment. Especially when I go to bed and wake up feeling old. If I don’t cripple myself first perhaps I can run myself into a younger, leaner body. I guess having this race in front of me helps. if only I were vain enough to not need that external motivation. And I am vain. just not enough to suffer for it. My right side and left knee hurt all the time. I am hoping they hold up. I believe they will. I wish I could loose about 20 pounds right now. Take the weight off my knees. Dani warns me not to overdo it. I was sure excited about how strong I felt at the end of today’s run.

The Compound & Old Friends

When I was 13 or 14 this kid moved into my neighborhood and started riding the same bus to school with me. For some reason we were instant enemies, coming very very close to blows many times. But our little brothers became fast friends and pretty soon for some strange reason we put our differences aside and became friends as well. We discovered we had remarkable parallel lives. I’m 5 days older than Akoni and his little brother is 5 days older than my little brother. Our fathers both fought in the war and then both died as civilians around the same time. Weird stuff like that. We became Inseparable for most of High School. A week after we both turned 18 we moved away from home for the first time, almost 5000 miles, to Louisiana. We had adventures and heartbreaks lived a lot and came back to Alaska 9 months later. Then he moved to Hawaii in 92 or 93, I can’t remember exactly when. We stayed in touch, I visited once. But we haven’t seen each other more than a handful of times in the last 15 years.

But now he lives in LA as well. Life is strange that way. Akoni has spent more than the last decade as a pioneer in the sport of Mountain Boarding. If you don’t know what that is I posted pictures. Yesterday he was out at the RedBull Compound with some friends so Dani and I went over to say hi. We hadn’t actually seen each other in 4 or 5 years. The Compound is this “Oasis” of sorts for Motocross, Mountain bike and other Action Sports athletes, hidden way back in a valley in the desert not far from where we live. It’s private and massive and very cool. The pictures I shot only show about 5% of the place, maybe even less. It’s a pretty awesome training ground for people that like to break themselves. It was all I could do to keep Dani from strapping on the pads herself.

We hung out for several hours and watched them jump and build more jumps. It was very cool to see my old friend flying. So good at this sport he has pursued with such vigor. It’s hard to find more words than that. Hopefully you understand.

Endurocross

A few weeks ago I wrote about this. Well here is some of the video I promised.

We’ve been up here all summer shooting, so what do we do when we get a day off? Go shoot some more!

This was all done for fun and I didn’t spend more than a half day editing, but I still think it’s pretty cool. Kudos to my PDP partner Danielle Jacobs who pulled double duty as host and additional camera operator. I also want to thank Derek Mahoney for his time and Trent for the music.

Enduro-X

Yesterday we shot this event. It’s called ENDUROCROSS and it’s frickin insane. A serious Roman gladiator style contest of man, machine & nature. I’ll post up some video very soon.

These crappy ass pictures were taken by one of our favorite rednecks, Troy Dubose, with my iPhone. They don’t quite represent the carnage we witnessed, but hey, I guess you had to be there.

Right now Dani & I are at SeaTac (this mobile blogging is sweet!) enroute to LA for two days of furious casting. Then it’s back to the sticks untill it gets too cold for us…
